The Esquel Group

In 2020, the Esquel Group, a leading global textile manufacturer, announced the closure of its operations in Mauritius after decades of activity due to the ongoing commercial tensions between the United States and China. This decision directly impacted approximately 1,700 employees, resulting in significant layoffs and workforce displacement.

During this period, Me. Al-Assad Peeroo acted as legal counsel for the 1,700 affected employees, providing representation and guidance throughout the negotiation process with the company, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour at the time, Mr. Soodesh Callichurn. As a result of these negotiations, the 1700 employees successfully secured one month’s salary per year of service. Following the settlement, the employees publicly expressed their gratitude to Me. Al-Assad Peeroo for his dedication and efforts. Additionally, as a token of consideration following the challenges posed by COVID-19, Me. Al-Assad Peeroo did not charge the usual 10% professional fee.

Through his legal intervention, Me. Al-Assad Peeroo was instrumental in ensuring an orderly and legally compliant resolution, protecting the interests of the employees.
